How to Prepare for a Ride Around the World

Thinking of riding around the world? Here are some travel tips to help you prepare. This list is not exhaustive but does outline the process Lee and Paul followed to get ready for their adventure in 2015 – plus some useful things they learnt along the way. Happy riding!

Make arrangements for your pets

“Finding a home for my buddy and then leaving her – the sacrifices we make for the dream!” Says Lee. Lee was able to find a friend who was happy to care for Lilly while she travelled for a year. Fortunately they were equally happy for Lilly to return to Lee when she arrived home.

Consult a Travel Doctor – they have great tips and are very knowledgeable. Vaccinations are expensive but it’s better to be safe than sorry! This is a list of the vaccinations recommended to Lee and Paul before they travelled around the world in 2015.

  • Glasses (reading and sunglasses)
  • Board shorts (togs)
  • Puffer Jacket
  • Hiking pants (convert to shorts)
  • Thongs (jandals)
  • Runners, Sun Hat
  • Woollen Hat (converts to neck warmer)
  • Toilet Bag
  • Bedwear (summer PJ’s)
  • Jocks (5 each)
  • Socks (2 normal, 2 liners, 1 HD)
  • Singlet
  • T-shirts (light-weight, drip-dry x 3)
  • Collared T-shirt (drip-dry) – more formal
  • Long Sleeve Shirt (collared) – formal and for mosquito protection
  • Woollen Gloves (can be worn under winter motorbike gloves)

  • Thermals (top and pants)
  • Pocket Raincoat

  • Singlet tops (drip-dry x 3)
  • Jeans (camping drip-dry)
  • Knee-length pants (drip-dry)
  • Long-sleeve shirt (drip-dry and for mosquito protection)
  • Little Black Dress! Can be dressed up or down (no-iron)
  • Black Slip (to wear to bed)
  • T-shirts (drip-dry x 2)
  • Thermals (top and pants)
  • Fleece top
  • Light Jacket
  • Beanie (converts to neck warmer)
  • Bathing Suit (togs)
  • Skirt (for over togs and for travelling in Iran)
  • Sarong (for travelling in Iran and because they’re handy!)
